That’s right, the foldable device from Samsung is finally a reality. Dubbed the Galaxy Fold, this device was the first device that was announced at Unpacked 2019.
A Smartphone. A Tablet. Folded into One.
Samsung is using a new 7.3″ Infinity Flex Display (1536 x 1960) that allows the phone itself to have a tablet-sized screen that can be folded to fit into a pocket. The best part is, it can fold up to a smaller 4.6″ display (840 x 1960).
Samsung has built a sturdy backbone to the device, with a hinge system that has multiple interlocking gears. All of these gears are hidden at the rear of the device, and allow the Galaxy Fold to transform from tablet to phone modes. Samsung is creating four different colors for the Galaxy Fold and they look pretty cool.
Samsung is allowing the Galaxy Fold to run three apps at once on this Android device, and it’s using an app continuity system to adjust these apps when you move between tablet and phone modes. Apps like WhatsApp, Microsoft Office, and YouTube have all been optimized for the new display and modes, and Samsung has been working with Google to ensure Android fully supports this display.
Samsung is using 512GB of Universal Flash Storage 3.0 (eUFS) for fast speeds as the internal storage, alongside a 7nm processor and 12GB of RAM. All of this is powered by two batteries with a combined capacity of 4,380mAh.
There are 6 cameras, but the folding form factor makes for an unusual arrangement. There are 3 cameras on the back, 1 on the front and 2 on the inside. Folded or unfolded, there’s always a camera available to photography what you want – you or your subject.
Now let’s run down all the specs.
How about the price?
Samsung has announced that the Galaxy Fold will be available to buy on April 26th 2019 for a whopping $1980! The fold surely doesn’t come cheap.
